Too often, talented engineers know what needs to be done but can't execute because of rigid processes or endless data requirements. Some of our most effective projects have been skunkworks initiatives where engineers took total ownership and drove problems to completion. We want to normalize that approach at Ashby.

Our engineering processes often carry a pessimistic mindset—boxing people into smaller roles to minimize risk. We're building an optimistic environment that trusts engineers to own more, achieve more, and innovates faster by often staying out of their way.

What You'll Do

As an Engineering Manager, you'll focus on people, culture, and environment—not sprint planning or making product decisions for your team. Your core responsibilities include:

• Build and develop your engineering team, helping them thrive with the ownership and autonomy they're given
• Foster a culture that empowers engineers to do their best work consistently with minimal distraction
• Provide coaching and feedback on product and technical specs, helping ICs identify scope tradeoffs and quality improvements (while they drive final decisions)
• Grow junior engineers into capable leaders who can own large, loosely-defined projects with minimal intervention
• Stay hands-on: debug customer issues, ship bug fixes, and improve developer experience while staying off the critical path
• Contribute to technical projects like data generation and simulation for demo accounts, keeping your skills current
• Lead a team of approximately 6 direct reports, enabling high-touch mentorship and observation

You're an experienced engineering leader who believes in trusting engineers, reducing process overhead, and creating environments where talented people can do their best work. You enjoy coding, understand technical systems deeply, and can balance hands-on contribution with team leadership. You're collaborative, embrace ownership culture, and want to help shape how engineering teams operate.
